Job Summary:
Discovery Lab, a hands-on science center and children’s museum, is hiring a creative, highly-skilled, self-motivated, and organized individual to direct its education department.  This is a senior-level position reporting to the Executive Director/CEO.  As a member of the leadership team, the job requires previous experience in informal science education, program development, staff management, project planning, and project management. 

The Director of Education, along with the leadership team, upholds the educational vision for Discovery Lab’s family and school programs by translating long-range goals into effective strategies to meet diverse audience and stakeholder needs that measurably increase school participation and family-learning engagement.  The Director of Education serves as the principle lead of the museum’s educational experience—providing oversight of the development, creation, implementation, and evaluation of the museum’s dynamic, high quality programs that provide extraordinary and engaging science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) and Health and Wellness based learning experiences.  This position works collaboratively with the members of the management team to execute the plans of the museum, including exhibits, outreach, development, marketing, operational, and financial goals outlined in the strategic plan. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
The Director of Education is responsible for all educational programming as follows:

  • Manage the design and implementation of educational programming including: on-site programming for field trips, demonstrations, workshops, classes, camps, rotating educational activities, and programming for specific audiences; outreach programming at venues including schools, libraries, festivals, and other public events
  • Develop programs that encourage student, teacher, and family engagement and skill in STEAM subjects, aligning activities and content to the Oklahoma Academic Standards and best practices in STEAM-based learning
  • Create and manage an annual program plan and budget to provide world-class visitor experiences and reach target audience
  • Work with the development team to identify and secure funding support for programs, exhibits, projects, materials, and equipment
  • Develop, implement, and maintain metrics and evaluations for program offerings.  Work with marketing team to implement customer surveys and feedback and development to provide program evaluation and data collection for grant reporting
  • Recruit, train, and manage a team of dynamic education staff, as well as provide training for interns and volunteers to implement on-floor programming
  • Build relationships and partnerships with strategic, like-minded partners and collaborators in the community to expand programming and reach of Discovery Lab.  Develop professional networks with organizations that include museums, non-profit, for-profit and educational institutions and associations

Secondary Functions:

  • Maintains a safe and secure environment for guests and staff
  • Maintains integrity and appearance of Discovery Lab’s education spaces, materials, and props
  • Keeps current in science and education related to Discovery Labs exhibits and programs
  • Assumes tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director/CEO
  • Contributes to a positive, respectful, and creative culture

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Requirements:

  • Have a strong/proven background in program development. planning, and presentation
  • Experience in research and writing of educational programs
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills including public-speaking to all types of audiences
  • Professional in attitude and appearance
  • Able to develop and monitor staff and staff schedules
  • Skilled in hiring, training, and managing staff
  • Researching, reviewing, and/or writing grants
  • Collecting and analyzing program and participant data
  • Self-directed
  • Flexible (as schedule may include weekends, early hours, and evenings—in addition to weekdays)
  • Knowledge of museum pedagogy and informal science education
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • Proven time management skills
  • Ability to effectively manage and track multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, and meet stringent and overlapping deadlines
  • Demonstrated skills in teamwork and collaboration with colleagues, with varied skills and responsibilities meeting individual, departmental, and organizational deadlines
  • Demonstrated abilities in strategic planning
  • Demonstrated knowledge of elementary, pre-and middle school education, curriculum and teacher needs
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication and customer service skills to work effectively with people of diverse talents and backgrounds
  • Understanding of confidentiality and protocol

Education & Work Experience:

Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree in education, science, math, computer science or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 3 years administrative experience, including budgets, grants, and staffing
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive program management, including staff supervision, management of multiple projects, and budget responsibility
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with the public, formal and informal settings
  • Minimum 3 years of museum pedagogy and informal science education experience
  • Minimum 3 years of informal experience in group management and group facilitation

Preferences:

  • Bilingual—Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background check and drug screening

This is an exempt, salaried position that is regular full-time. Salary is commensurate with experience.
