Oklahoma Museums Association and Oklahoma Arts Council are joining with
Oklahoma museums, historical societies, historic sites, zoos and botanical
gardens, historic houses, living history museums, tribal cultural centers and
other cultural organizations and museum-related institutions statewide to
celebrate Oklahoma Museums Week, May 13-19. Oklahoma Museums Week is dedicated
to celebrating the rich variety of museums in Oklahoma, their contributions to
the economy, civic and cultural life and the unique, personal experiences
museums offer visitors each and every day. Governor Mary Fallin has proclaimed Oklahoma Museums Week as a time for communities to recognize
Oklahoma museums and the contributions they make to preserve Oklahoma&rsquo;s rich culture.
Oklahoma legislators as well as OMA members received a museums advocacy
piece.<br /><br />Download the <a href="/sites/oma/uploads/images/documents/2012AdvocacyPiece.pdf">2012 Oklahoma Museums Week Advocacy Piece</a>&nbsp;which is full of great information!</p>
<p>
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">
</span>A
special thanks to Governor Fallin for issuing the following proclamation:</p>
<p>
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">
</span>Oklahoma Museums Week Proclamation</p>
<p>
Whereas,
Oklahoma is home to 500 museums and cultural organizations that are located in
every region of the state that serve as educational institutions, preservation
agencies, agencies of scientific research, and cultural centers; and</p>
<p>
Whereas,
Oklahoma museums represent a multitude of disciplines and learning experiences,
including art museums, historical societies, historic sites, zoos, aquariums,
science centers, botanical gardens, historic houses, natural history,
children&rsquo;s museums, living history museums, tribal cultural centers and
museums; and</p>
<p>
Whereas,
Oklahoma museums encourage curiosity and provide a source of enjoyment and
education for every generation and every community across the state and enhance
those provided by the public sector; and</p>
<p>
Whereas,
Oklahoma museums nourish minds and spirits by fostering contemplation,
exploration, critical thinking, and dialogue to advance knowledge,
understanding, and appreciation of history, science, the arts and the natural
world; and</p>
<p>
Whereas,
Oklahoma museums forge relationships with community partners, such as schools,
libraries, neighborhood and social service organizations, to foster civic
understanding; and</p>
<p>
Whereas,
Oklahoma museums are vital to the preservation, interpretation, and
presentation of Oklahoma&rsquo;s heritage; </p>
<p>
Whereas,
Oklahoma museums contribute significantly to the livability and economic
viability of the state and its communities, create jobs, and attract tourists,
local visitors and businesses; and</p>
<p>
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">
</span>Whereas,
the Oklahoma Museums Association has served to bring important recognition of
this commemorative week and invites all museums, Oklahoma residents, and local
governments to use this milestone to recognize and celebrate the contributions
of Oklahoma museums as they serve communities, the nation, and the world; and</p>
<p>
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">
</span>Now,
therefore hereby proclaim May 13-19, 2012 as Oklahoma Museums Week.</p>
<p>
And
urge Oklahoma residents to participate in and celebrate the contributions that
museums make to the great State of Oklahoma.</p>

<p><em>Statewide hidden ticket giveaway starts in January </em></p>
<p>The Oklahoma Museums Association kicks-off its 40th anniversary celebration in January with a statewide contest showcasing Oklahoma's museums and cultural organizations. The OMA will conduct a hidden ticket giveaway with a new secret location hiding four free tickets to one of Oklahoma's 500-plus museums, historic sites, zoos and botanical gardens or historic houses each month throughout 2012. </p>
<p>Members of the public are invited to visit the OMA Facebook page for clues to find the free tickets. Each month a new location will hide the tickets and new clues will be posted until the tickets have been found. To win, participants must decode the clues, visit the participating museum's welcome desk or admission area and mention "Happy 40th Anniversary Oklahoma Museums Association&rdquo; to claim the prize. Prizes include a four pack of tickets to a family-friendly attraction in Oklahoma.<br /><br />"We are so excited to celebrate our 40th anniversary and get everyone around the state involved in the excitement," said Brenda Granger, executive director of the OMA. "We are very fortunate to have so many wonderful museums in our state and we encourage families to get out and enjoy all they each have to offer."<br /><br />The giveaway prize for the month of January is four free tickets to the Oklahoma City National Memorial &amp; Museum.
