The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) and the Oklahoma Museums Association (OMA) will present in 2010 a joint annual meeting in Oklahoma City, OK, from September 22-25 with the theme, The Winds of Opportunity.

Much as Oklahoma’s infamous tornadoes and storms generate both gentle and severe winds impacting the state, so too have the winds of opportunity impacted the nation’s cultural landscape. Winds, while possibly destructive, also can usher in new perspectives, opportunities, and critical self examination that may lead to strengthening organizations and the development of previously unforeseen goals. The 2010 joint Annual Meeting of AASLH and the Oklahoma Museums Association will consider these ideas against the backdrop of a changing America.  OMA is excited to announce there will be a special tribal track as part of the 2010 conference, thanks to the coordination of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

In the spirit of this theme, the Program Committee is seeking proposals that:

􀂃 Feature models and examples of best practices,

􀂃 promote critical organizational review and revitalization,

􀂃 identify new launches and pilots to watch,

􀂃 share tools for successful work in museums and historical organizations,

􀂃 introduce provocative ideas for discussion, and

􀂃 dissect failures we can learn from.

These proposals will focus on innovation in developing, marketing, and delivering our product, building audience, and

strengthening sustainability. What can we learn from your institution, and others you know of, as you work to:

1) Strengthen your institution in an ever changing museum world?

2) Develop collaborative partnerships that enhance and empower your mission?

3) Quantify your organizational impact?

4) Leverage your strength as a keeper of historical truth and authenticity?

5) Deliver a new “experience”?

6) Connect personal and community histories to larger themes?

7) Connect new audiences with your site, collections, and intellectual resources?

8) Market and promote yourself creatively?

9) Build community and be a player in social changes?

Proposals will be accepted in one of the following six formats:

1) Panels

2) Workshops

3) Roundtables

4) Point/Counterpoint

5) Laboratories

6) Current Issues Forum

Each session must have a chairperson responsible for finding other speakers and coordinating logistics. All chairs must be affiliated with an institutional member or be an AASLH individual member. Topics for sessions should fall into at least one of the categories listed the Proposal Form.

Proposals must be submitted on a Call for Proposals form. You may submit the form via email, fax, or mail. Visit
