
Collection, Use, and Care of Historic Photographs Institute
The Oklahoma Department of Libraries is hosting a three-day institute on the collection, use, and care of historic photographs, August 12-14, at the Cherokee Resort and Casino in Catoosa (Tulsa), Oklahoma. A Pre-Institute Workshop is scheduled for Monday, August 11 on "Digital Projects: From Concept to Completion." The events are a part of the 2008 National Institutes of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums, a series of in-depth learning experiences.
While the target audience for the institutes and workshops are tribal archivists, librarians, and museum staff, the topics offered are of benefit to non-tribal institutions as well. Topics addressed include the methods of identifying different types of photographs, dating photographs, collection development and management, identifying and addressing problems commonly found in photo collections, exhibit considerations, preservation, repairing photographic images with Adobe Photoshop software, funding opportunities for collection care, considerations when working with scrapbooks or photo albums, and making custom carriers and enclosures for oversized and fragile items. At the Pre-Institute participants will gain an understanding of the basic principles of planning and executing successful digital projects, including training, quality control, workflow, monitoring, and day to day operating of the digitization process. Three model projects will be demonstrated.
Registration fees for the three-day Institute are $200 per person, which includes breakfast, lunch, and materials, including. Cost to attend the Pre-Institute is $50 per person, which includes breakfast, lunch, and materials.
The workshop and institute are funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Oklahoma Historical Records Advisory Board, and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, with technical assistance from Amigos Library Services.
