Technology in Museum Education

Standing Professional Committee Oklahoma Museum Educators (OKME) Mid-Winter Meeting and Seminar. Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa. The registration fee is $65 for OMA members and $85 for non-members. The fee includes lunch. The registration deadline is January 27.

The Fourteenth Annual Mid-Winter Meeting and Seminar of the Oklahoma Museum Educators (OKME) will be held on Friday, February 6 from 11am-5pm at the Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa. The presenters for the seminar will be Scott Sayre Ed.D. and Kris Wetterlund, both of Minneapolis. Scott Sayre has over fifteen years of experience guiding museums in the selection, development and application of educational and business technologies. Among other accomplishments, Sayre has served as the Chair of the American Association of Museums' Media and Technology professional committee. Kris Wetterlund has worked with teachers as an art museum educator for the past sixteen years, in the education department at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and as Director of Education at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Wetterlund has designed and implemented programs to train teachers to use technology and museum resources in the classroom, and has developed award winning online museum programs for teachers. They will present information to Oklahoma museum educators on utilizing technology in the museum learning environment with an emphasis on the role and integration of technologies in educational services, products and programs designed to serve various audiences. Participants will learn how technology can play an important part in the interaction between the audience and museum art and artifacts. Many traditional museum education programs are just now beginning to incorporate technology, and this seminar will be of great benefit to Oklahoma's museums. Ideas which may be explored, depending on the audience, will include interactive websites, wireless technologies, podcasts, cell phone tours and much more. The use of this technology will open many possibilities for engaging current audiences and attracting new and emerging audiences.

The Technology in Museum Education seminar will be presented in such a way that museums of all sizes and disciplines will be able to adapt the information at their institution. The information will also be applicable for use with a diversity of museums, including rural and urban, large and small. OMA desires to have all museum educators knowledgeable in applications of technology and museum education programs to better serve all audiences.

Attendees will enjoy food, networking, business meeting, and a tour. Who should attend: staff and volunteers; museum educators; anyone responsible for or interested in developing adult, children and school programs; volunteer coordinators; museum docents and volunteers. OKME annual dues are $10, in addition to regular OMA membership dues. Membership is open to anyone concerned with museum learning, research, evaluation of programs, and/or exhibition development.

Partners and sponsors include the Oklahoma Arts Council, Kirkpatrick Family Fund, Philbrook Museum of Art and the Charles and Lynne Schusterman Family Foundation.
