History of Native American Art and Galleries at the University of Oklahoma, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art – OKNAMPA Program
The Oklahoma Native American Museum Professionals (OKNAMPA) Meeting and Program will be on February 10 from 11:00am-2:00pm at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Norman. Staff of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art will host a tour of the newly reinstalled Native American galleries. The tour will include a discussion of the history of Native American fine art at the University of Oklahoma, beginning with the early Kiowa artists and their relationship with Oscar Jacobson, and will conclude with the recent gifts of the Eugene B. Adkins Collection and the James T. Bialac Native American Art Collection. Identity and the Museum – OKME Program
The Oklahoma Museum Educators (OKME) Meeting and Program will be on February 23 from 11:00am-3:30pm at the Sam Noble Museum, Norman. Every human has a personal identity, created through culture, life experience and education. Neil Postman declared, “Every museum offers an answer to the question, ‘What does it mean to be human?’” The topic of meaningful personal identities and your museum’s role in visitor identity discovery will be presented by Holly Hughes, Head of Education, Daniel Swan, Curator of Ethnology and Peter Tirrell, Associate Director from Sam Noble Museum and Susan Baley, Director of Education from Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. Where to Share Collections? – OKRA Program
The Oklahoma Registrars Association (OKRA) Meeting and Program will be February 27 from 10:00am-2:00pm at Oklahoma Territorial Museum, Guthrie. Patrons walk in ready to donate a potential artifact but you already have three of the item is totally out of your scope of collections. Where do you suggest they go? You want to deaccession some items that are not relevant to your collection but they are still in good condition and might be needed someplace else. What do you do? Come to the meeting with your organization’s scope of collections and be prepared to share your contact information with the group. Museum Advocacy – OKMADA Conference Call
The Oklahoma Membership and Development Association (OKMADA) Meeting and Program will be held on February 28 from 1:00pm-2:00pm as a conference call. Join OKMADA to learn some simple ways to speak up for museums and discuss current issues facing museums. Sponsored by Oklahoma Arts Council, Kirkpatrick Family Fund and OKMADA.
