John Mark Rhea, 49, of Snyder, Oklahoma, died at home suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday, December 16, 2016. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Rhea, her husband, Ted Gee, and her granddaughter, Savannah Steele, of Sand Springs; and by Bart McClenny, of Snyder. John Rhea was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Rhea, and a beloved maternal grandmother, Wauneta Walters. His mother’s parents and grandparents were early residents of Snyder, and John Rhea made his home in a house originally owned by the family.

John Rhea graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2012 with a PhD in History. He is the author of A Field of Their Own: Women and American Indian History, 1830-1941, published by the University of Oklahoma Press (2016). Rhea was an author, contributor, and collaborator in a number of other projects.

John Rhea will be missed by many friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. An open, informal memorial service will be held in his honor at the Museum of the Great Plains, 601 NW Ferris Ave, Lawton, on December 29, 2016, at 2:00 pm.
