Oklahoma is home to 500+ museums!
Museums are fun and an important part of the community. Museums partner with schools to help teach state and local curriculum; museums are for everyone and are committed to ensuring that people of all backgrounds have access to high-quality museum experiences; and museums are trusted, in fact, the American public considers museums the most trustworthy source of information in America.
In addition to their educational and social impact, museums are economic engines. A short infographic which is fascinating on the economic impact of the state of Oklahoma’s museums and their visitors, can be viewed here. The annual total direct economic activity of Oklahoma museums and their 6 million visitors is over $482 million which includes $47+ million revenue generated to state and local government as well as supports almost 17,000 full time equivalent jobs.
During Oklahoma Museums Week, OMA will be sending all Oklahoma legislators a list of museums in their district as well as the infographic below. We have emailed legislative contact information to all Oklahoma museums encouraging them to contact their elected officials during Oklahoma Museums Week and invite them on a personal tour, convey how museums serve and are vital to the community in areas of the economy, education, overall quality of life and so much more. We also encourage Oklahoma museums to let the elected officials know how grateful you are for their public support of the Oklahoma Arts Council, Oklahoma Historical Society and Oklahoma Department of Libraries as these agencies, along with others, are such good partners with Oklahoma museums in service to the citizens of Oklahoma.
