Assistant Controller

First Americans Museum (FAM) seeks a highly organized candidate with excellent people skills for the position of Assistant Controller. The candidate for this position should be experienced in all aspects of financial management, including non-profit, partnership and corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecasts preparation, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures.  Fundamental to this position is working proactively and balancing multiple tasks.  Attention to detail, excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic are essential. 


  • Assist COO/CFO with management of all accounting operations including billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
  • Coordinate and assist with the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances.
  • Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements.
  • Coordinate and assist with the preparation of regulatory reporting including annual and periodic program review audits.
  • Research technical accounting issues for compliance as needed.
  • Support month-end and year-end close process.
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

  • 3-5 years of overall combined accounting and finance experience.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
  • Experience with financial statement preparation for all types of legal entities.
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year end close process.
  • Experience in preparing and review of partnership, corporate, payroll and non-profit tax filings.
  • Experience with non-profit management organizations preferred.
  • Experience with various accounting software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

The Assistant Controller reports to the COO/CFO or other personnel as directed by the Director/CEO.

The Assistant Controller is to adhere to the policies and ethics of FAM at all times. S/he wears appropriate office attire as per policy.  S/he asks for assistance on any matters not covered by this job description.
