Assistant Manager

The Cleveland County Historical Society in Norman, Oklahoma is seeking a museum professional to assist in running the Moore-Lindsay Historical House Museum. The Historical House is owned by the City of Norman and the Museum is operated by the Cleveland County Historical Society.  The Victorian-style house was built in 1899 and now serves as a museum depicting a middle-class lifestyle at the turn of the twentieth century in Cleveland County.

Job Description:

As one of only two employees at the Moore-Lindsay House, the Assistant Manager is responsible for helping with almost all major duties involved in the running of the museum. This person will work closely with the Museum Manager in completing all duties associated with the day-to-day operations of the museum. The Assistant Manager will work side-by-side with, and occasionally supervise, volunteers and interns, and may be required to interact with the Historical Society Board of Directors and/or representatives of the City of Norman. This part-time position is 40 hours per month (variable between Wednesday and Saturday, 11am-4pm, with occasional shifts on Friday evenings) at an hourly rate of $15.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Routine Tasks:

  • Conduct tours, answer the phone, and interact with the public, as needed
  • Curate one exhibit and one micro-exhibit per year from start to finish, with the guidance of the Museum Manager
  • Operate the museum in the absence of the Manager
  • Create and publish content to the museum’s Instagram and Pinterest pages
  • Maintain CCHS membership database
  • Answer research requests as they are received
  • Operate the museum gift shop (Square software)
  • Assist with cleaning the facility and reporting maintenance needs

Programs and Events, as needed:

Help with events and educational programs, including:

  • Planning and coordination
  • Set-up and clean-up
  • Working the event or program

Archive work, as needed:

  • Accession, organize, and store new donations
  • Perform collection inventories
  • Maintain digital and paper records of the archival and artifact collection
  • Photograph or scan collection materials

Position Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of college, including courses in history, anthropology, museum studies, or archival studies -OR- at least 1 year work experience in a museum, archive, or library
  • Self-motivated and capable of working unsupervised. Must be comfortable being the only person in the building
  • Willingness and availability to work a varied schedule, including Saturdays, occasional Friday evenings, and the second Wednesday of every month.  Schedule will vary based on the needs of the museum; applicants must be prepared to adapt to a changing weekly schedule
  • Must be extremely skilled in interacting with individuals and groups of people of all ages and from all walks of life, in person, over the phone, and in writing
  • Basic computer skills, including Windows, Microsoft Office, & Google software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Customer service and/or teaching experience
  • Familiarity with Norman and Cleveland County history
  • Comfortable with software such as Weebly, Mailchimp, Canva, and Square
  • Knowledgeable about the Moore-Lindsay House, the operation of house museums, and public history
