What we want
Discovery Lab is looking for a dynamic and visionary employee to fill the role of Classes and Outreach Education Manager. This role will be responsible for staff training and planning, program development and delivery, and day-to-day operations of the museum’s classes and outreach division to provide a robust and fun schedule of programs for children ages 2–12 and their families. Programming is to have an interdisciplinary focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) within a welcoming, inclusive, safe, and positive learning environment. The Classes and Outreach Education Manager will work with the Director of Education to build and maintain departmental systems and establish meaningful relationships internally and externally in the community. 

What you’ll do
Primary functions:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the classes and outreach division of the education department, this includes but is not limited to staff scheduling, resource allocation, supply purchasing, and departmental employee relations
  • Craft a vision to outline the expectations for curriculum, facilitation, and learning environments
  • Continue to build knowledge and understanding of best teaching practices
  • Recruit, interview, and hire top performing leaders across all roles on the education team
  • Onboard new employees through an informative plan to ensure new staff understand team/role and are thoroughly trained
  • Coach and develop team members through feedback cycles, observations, and professional development opportunities
  • Establish a strong cohesive, inclusive, and welcoming team culture within and cross-departmentally
  • Adjust staffing structures as needed to meet demands
  • Understand participant and partner needs, gathering data to ensure that satisfaction and compliance goals are met
  • Work cross-functionally with other museum members and teams to maximize collaboration and problem-solving

Secondary functions:

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local, state, and national education partners
  • Facilitation of Discovery Lab STEAM and H&W programming
  • Maintains a safe and secure environment for guests and staff
  • Assumes tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Education

What you’ll need
Knowledge and skills:

  • Operations and administrative experience
  • Knowledge of museum pedagogy and informal education
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment in anticipating problems before they arise
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • Demonstrated people management skills
  • Proven time management skills and ability to work under pressure with flexibility
  • Effective management skills and capable of tracking multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, and meet stringent and overlapping deadlines
  • Exhibits skills in teamwork and collaboration with colleagues, with varied skills and responsibilities meeting individual and organizational deadlines
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication and customer service skills to work effectively with people of diverse talents and backgrounds
  • Excellent knowledge of large group dynamics, learning styles, instructional strategies, and classroom management
  • Promotes teamwork and collaboration with colleagues and other Discovery Lab staff to meet individual and organization’s objectives

Education & work experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related area or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to present 21st Century process skills and content in an engaging way with a diverse population of learners
  • Comprehensive understanding of STEAM and Health & Wellness educational topics
  • Minimum 1 year of program management, including staff supervision and budget responsibility
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in managing informal youth programming

Preferences:

  • Nonprofit and/or museum experience
  • Early childhood education experience
  • Language fluency other than English to support Discovery Lab’s accessibility mission and objectives
  • First-aid/CPR certification

How you’ll work
This job is a regular, full-time, exempt, position. The typical work schedule for this job is Monday-Friday 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Occasional after hour or weekends may be required. Shared office environment.

Physical requirements:
60% Sitting, 30% Standing, 10% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling no more than 10-30 lbs.

Additional requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Pre-employment and/or pre-duty checks, such as criminal background check, alcohol and drug test, and reference checks
