Gilcrease Museum/The University of Tulsa

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Communications Manager is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a strategic integrated communication plan, social media and website posts to support Gilcrease Museum becoming a major attraction and destination for the Tulsa Region as well as further developing its national audience. The Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director of Gilcrease Museum.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:

  • Manages writing and communication support for museum operations, including public relations, media relations, publications, marketing, advertising and event promotion, as assigned
  • Promotes the museum to local, regional and national audiences through earned media opportunities using appropriate media outlets
  • Responds to all media inquiries; may require serving in a spokesperson capacity, as directed
  • Creates and executes print and digital advertising strategy, including managing contracts with various publications to support media operations
  • Oversees and coordinates the development, design, printing and distribution of all museum print and digital publications including the quarterly member magazine, weekly member emails, brochures, rack cards, flyers, posters, handouts, event invitations and others as assigned
  • Works closely with graphic and visual design contractors to develop publications and advertising concepts that reinforce museum messaging for multiple audiences
  • Manages social media and works with team to incorporate appropriate imagery and video
  • Develops and edits content for Gilcrease website
  • Conceptualizes and writes copy to support the activities of various museum departments; edits and proofreads copy by other museum staff
  • Fulfills special assignments including speech and scriptwriting, ad copywriting
  • Provides event support, as needed
  • Handles other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, marketing or media-related field; minimum 3-5 years of experience in communication, journalism, marketing, or related field at a museum, educational institution, corporation, non-profit organization or agency; experience in publications and visual presentations; excellent written and oral communication; strong organizational, and interpersonal skills and consistent ability to meet tight deadlines; able to work effectively with people at all levels of an organization and able to establish solid rapport with internal and external constituencies; proficient in Microsoft Office and social media tools.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior experience in a museum; knowledge of art; media buying experience.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Primarily indoors. Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; may be required to work evenings or weekends due to special events scheduling.
