The Communications Director will work with senior staff to develop and implement an overall communication strategy that consistently articulates Science Museum Oklahoma’s (SMO) mission, promotes its programs, and strengthens the Museum’s brand identity across key stakeholder audiences. This includes among others, media, print, and electronic formats. The Communications Director leads the Museum’s communications team and works closely with senior staff on a variety of strategic initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or related field.
  • At least 7 years of progressive communications experience, including experience in a leadership role within a complex organization, covering areas such as social media, media relations, website content, crisis communications, and donor communications.
  • Open availability to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required for Museum programs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Direct the strategic objectives of the Communications Department to meet Science Museum Oklahoma goals.
  • Oversee day to day operations of the department and its staff. Mentor and lead members of the team. Coordinate hiring, scheduling, motivating, training, coaching, evaluating, disciplining and terminating of department staff.
  • Work on cross-departmental projects to ensure that Museum goals are met.
  • Ensure that projects are completed on schedule, on budget and with the highest quality and efficiency.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan and the crisis communications plan.
  • Oversee the continued development and use of the SMO brand
  • Oversee all copy intended for public consumption to ensure its alignment with the strategic communications plan
  • Oversee, and execute as needed, the development of all print and branded materials
  • Oversee the development of electronic communications, including SMO’s website, bimonthly electronic newsletter and other electronic communications
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed
  • Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization. Actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the sector, as well as SMO’s programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
  • Manage relationships with any communications related vendors or consultants
  • Other duties as required
