What we want
Discovery Lab is a hands-on science center and children’s museum. The Director of Development is a senior leadership position responsible for directing the development department and is a position that reports to the Executive Director/CEO.  

The Director of Development plays a critical role, partnering with the museum’s senior leadership team, in strategic decision making and operations as Discovery Lab continues to seek out new sources of fundraising and foster established strategic relationships.

The Director of Development will utilize best practices and industry knowledge to lead a team that meets fundraising goals. They will also work cross-functionally to fulfill internal departmental funding needs.

What you’ll do
Primary functions:

  • Establishes fundraising objectives for the organization, setting one year, five year, and longer-term goals.
  • Maintains a list of potential financial donors including corporations, foundations, and individuals.
  • Researches potential sources of, and applies for, grants and public funding.
  • Oversees the fundraising process and maintains records of receipts and disbursements of funds.
  • Plans fundraising events that effectively communicate the mission of the organization.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains supervisory and management staff in the department.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees and in accordance with Discovery Lab policy.

Secondary functions:

  • Maintains a safe and secure environment for guests and staff
  • Keeps current in best practices related to development and fundraising
  • Assumes tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director/CEO

What you’ll need
Knowledge and skills:

  • Commitment to Discovery Lab’s mission to inspire children, connect families, and build community through exploration, exhibits, programs, and play.
  • Personnel management—proven track record in fundraising strategies, strategic planning, and coalition building. Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
  • Operational skills—proven track record in developing and managing development and fundraising systems in a high growth organization; strong project management skills.
  • Attention to detail—tireless attention to detail and ability to complete work with the highest level of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Action oriented—ability to work in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment. Strong work ethic, flexible, and able to multi-task. Educations & work experience:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Five years’ experience in fundraising for a nonprofit organization.
  • Five years’ experience managing personnel.

How you’ll work
This job is a regular, full-time, exempt, salaried position. The typical work schedule for this job is Monday-Friday 9 am – 5:30 pm. Occasional after hour or weekends may be required. Shared office environment.

Physical requirements
85% Sitting, 10% Standing, 5% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling no more than 10-30 lbs.
