Horticulture Technician

Employment Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Experience Required: One (1) year of experience in formal landscape and grounds maintenance or an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties will be considered.

Minimum Education Requirements: High School diploma or G.E.D.

Department: Buildings and Gardens

Direct Supervisor: Assistant manager of Horticulture.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Primary Work Location: Zoo Setting both indoors and outdoors.

Certification: Valid Oklahoma driver’s license

Other: This position is safety sensitive. It is subject to pre-employment and/or periodic background checks and drug testing.  

Job Summary: Helps maintain the horticultural program through plant health, pest control, flowerbed maintenance, and irrigation work of the Zoo’s botanical gardens.

Essential Job Functions
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

  • Mow, weed, mulch, prune trees, load plant debris, and water plants and lawns.
  • Install and repair fencing.
  • Lay turf, flagstone, edging, and sub-surface drainage; build retaining walls.
  • Operate hand tools and heavy landscaping equipment.
  • Provide quality customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Promote and contribute to the Oklahoma City Zoo’s sustainability initiatives and green practices.
  • Maintains Gardens and Grounds in and around an assigned area.
  • Works with Buildings and Grounds Teams to provide quality service.
  • Communicate effectively regarding the status of projects as they pertain to the assigned areas of horticulture and grounds maintenance.
  • Foster constructive attitudes and team orientation among staff.
  • Communicate and collaborate with Zoo personnel and professional colleagues.
  • Represent the zoo in a professional manner.
  • Create an atmosphere of respect with peers and work as a team.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner and meet deadlines.
  • Driving around the Oklahoma City area throughout the year.

  • Techniques of landscape maintenance.
  • Soil and weather conditions present in the Oklahoma City area.
  • Plant species native to the State of Oklahoma.
  • Operation and repair of landscaping equipment.
  • Natural and chemical pest control and safe methods for application.
  • Oklahoma pesticide laws and application regulations.
  • Oklahoma City Zoological Park's programs, activities, exhibits, and events.


  • Reading plans, blueprints, and design drawings for garden construction projects.
  • Understanding and interpreting complex rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  • Supervising and training employees.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


  • Practice and foster safe work methods, identifying work place hazards, and using appropriate safety equipment.
  • Preparing records, reports, and correspondence.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors, vendors, and the public.
  • Prioritize and delegate responsibilities when necessary.
  • Work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and/or weekends and holidays and during emergency situations such as dictated by weather.
  • Drive around Oklahoma City area throughout the year.

Physical Demands

  • Required to walk, sit and stand for periods of time.
  • Push, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, and move intermittently throughout the day.
  • May be exposed to fumes, odors, dust, moving mechanical parts and vehicles.
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow and ice.
  • Exposure to potentially dangerous animals.
