Reports to: Director of Education

Job summary
This position is accountable for the staff planning, program delivery, and day-to-day operations of the museum’s education programming systems including floor education, outreach, museum classes, and camps.

Duties and responsibilities
Primary functions:

  • Support hiring, staff orientation, performance management, and performance reviews (including coaching and evaluations), communication (including department meetings and regular one-on-one staff discussions), and training for the high facilitation programs including demonstrations, inquiry activities and improvisational STEAM experiences on the exhibit floor on in the larger community.
  • Strategic ordering of educational program supplies, scheduling of learning experience staff, and day-to-day operations to maximize effectiveness.
  • Recruit, train, manage, and supervise the paid and unpaid staff and interns working in support of Discovery Lab’s educational mission to ensure positive program results and safety.
  • Collaborate with education staff to implement strategies to enhance Discovery Lab’s quality of programming and positive educational impact aligned with informal education best practices informed by research and in support of formal education, state and national science standards, and the needs of the community.
  • Evaluate, track, and collect data on learning experiences programs for continual improvement.

Secondary functions:

  • Deliver museum’s education programming including floor programs, outreach, demonstrations, and pick-up workshops on any topic to any age group.
  • Maintains a safe and secure environment for guests and staff.
  • Assumes tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Education.

Qualification requirements

Knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of museum pedagogy and informal education.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment in anticipating problems before they arise.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
  • Demonstrated people management skills.
  • Proven time management skills and ability to work under pressure with flexibility.
  • Effective management skills and capable of tracking multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, and meet stringent and overlapping deadlines.
  • Exhibits skills in teamwork and collaboration with colleagues, with varied skills and responsibilities meeting individual and organizational deadlines.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication and customer service skills to work effectively with people of diverse talents and backgrounds.
  • Excellent knowledge of large group dynamics, science inquiry, and learning theories based on research.
  • Promotes teamwork and collaboration within education and in colleagues and other Discovery Lab staff to meet individual and organization’s objectives.
  • Education & work experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related area or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in formal and informal education settings.
  • Minimum 1 year of program management, including staff supervision and budget responsibility.

Working conditions:
This job is a regular, full-time, non-exempt, hourly position. The typical work schedule for this job is Monday-Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Occasional after hour or weekends will be required. Shared office environment.

Physical requirements:
60% Sitting, 30% Standing, 10% Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling no more than 10-30 lbs.
