National Route 66 Museum – Application Deadline: August 31, 2021

The City of Elk City seeks a Museum Curator of the National Route Museum in Elk City, Oklahoma. Elk City is located on Route 66 in western Oklahoma and has a population of just under 12,000.

The National Route 66 Museum focuses on the people who lived, worked and traveled the "Mother Road" and offers visitors a classic walk through all eight states, highlighted by realistic murals and vignettes depicting the eras of the road and the interesting places that made Route 66 so famous. As you travel along, you can listen to recorded histories and personal accounts of the road from overhead audio kiosks. 

The National Route 66 Museum is a large campus complex consisting of 8 external museum buildings and a reproduction of the old town of Elk City square. There is a working blacksmith shop, farm and ranch, train depot and the old town building and education building as well as a preproduction of the Elk City old town square with doctor office, rock school, and various store fronts with working drug store.

This museum is operated by the city of Elk City and managed by a museum board of directors appointed by the City. Funding is through the City of Elk City and Western Oklahoma Historical Society. This Society is a 5013c non-profit group which supports the museum. The National Route Museum has a staff 6 to 7 full and part time employees.
The museum is open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm during the summer season and 6 days during the winter season.

Responsibilities:

  • Curator will be responsible for management of employees including scheduling, job assignments and more.
  • Curator will be responsible for coordinating exhibits, collections, preservation and rotation of exhibits.
  • Curator will be responsible for developing interpretation of objects and exhibitions.
  • Curator will be responsible for community outreach with events.
  • Curator will be responsible to collaborate with board of directors, colleagues, museum commission, City Manager and museum docents.
  • Curator will be responsible for maintenance of all buildings and museum grounds with assistance of the City of Elk City crews.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in museum science, history, archology, artifact preservation, or art history with preference given for Master’s degree.
  • Must be familiar with museum database (clover) inverntory control andpoint of sale software.
  • Preference of 3 to 5 years-experience in museum management.
  • Must be able to organize, present and communicate messages effectively with good project management skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be involved in continuing education with professional organizations.
  • Willing to relocate to Elk City, Oklahoma area and be involved in the community.

Salary and Benefits:
Full-time City of Elk City employee position.
Salary starting at $47,000 to $52,000 depending on level of experience.
Benefits include paid health insurance and paid time off based on an earned schedule through longevity on job.
