Position Overview
Philbrook Museum of Art seeks applications for a Retail Assistant Manager to join the team!

This position is primarily responsible for leading the sales and operations staff to exceed revenue goals and create an excellent guest experience.   Additionally, this role will oversee floor operations and maintain Gift Shop systems.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and continuous training to sales team.
  • Communicates sales and purchasing trends to team to maximize revenue potential.
  • Develops and monitor sales goals and motivate team to reach goals.
  • Identifies and update staff scheduling needs to ensure proper floor coverage is maintained.


  • Ensures sales team is trained to perform cash reporting and POS functions.
  • Maintains point of sale system.
  • Oversees customer shipping and packaging operations.
  • Manages supplies and equipment necessary to operate.

Merchandising and Inventory:

  • Assists in overall merchandising plans and upkeep.
  • Coordinates merchandise labeling and stock levels.
  • Keeps merchandise and display materials in stock room orderly and assessable.

Relationship management:

  • Communicates product knowledge with staff and guests.
  • Manages special orders as directed by Buyer/Manager.
  • Communicates offers, merchandise, and special opportunities to customers and build relationships.
  • Builds strong relationships with colleagues across the institution.

Attendance: Maintain prompt and reliable attendance to successfully perform duties of the job.

Equivalent Education/Experience

  • Associates degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of retail sales and leader experience.
  • One year of display and merchandising experience.
  • Experience selling in retail where organizational goals were met and maintained.


  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to quickly develop rapport and build/maintain effective relationships with museum guests and members.
  • Previous experience with motivating sales team in a retail setting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven team working ability.
  • Detailed oriented.
  • Flexible problem solver and active communicator for ongoing upkeep of customer expectations
  • Ability to take direction and work independently.
  • Thrives in fast paced, multi-faceted environment.
  • Proficient with a Personal Computer (PC) and ease with POS software
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure
