Position Overview
Philbrook Museum of Art is seeking Temporary Art Handlers. This position assists with all aspects of direct exhibition preparation, including handling, moving, packing/unpacking, and installing artwork; building exhibition furniture and mounts; wall patching and painting; lighting galleries; label and signage installation; and general maintenance related to the galleries and art storage. This assignment will last 3-5 weeks and must be able to begin work immediately. Hours are Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and can work anywhere from 20 to 40 hours weekly.

The ideal candidate is reliable, careful, highly conscientious, and collaborative, with excellent manual dexterity. A minimum of one year experience handling art in a museum setting, familiarity with shop tools, and experience in one or more of the following areas are strongly preferred: matting, framing, carpentry, metalsmithing, painting, or general construction.


  • Assist in installing and deinstalling exhibitions, installations, and rotations to include artworks, graphics, labels, educational components, and lighting by utilizing excellent carpentry skills in a safe manner.
  • Participate in all phases of art handling, preparation, and packing of artwork for storage, travel, study, and display. Fabricate pedestals, plinths, boxes, walls, and other items in a safe manner as needed. Retrieve, store, load, unload, mat, frame, mount, or provide other care as needed for safe movement and presentation of artwork.
  • Assist Preparator in routine maintenance and cleaning of all artwork, outdoor sculptures, galleries, storage areas, and other building areas as needed including changing lights, performing paint touch-ups, dusting, and general repairs. Follow policy on the proper use, care, and safety of tools and equipment.
  • Maintain prompt, reliable attendance to successfully perform duties of job.

Required Qualifications

  • Familiar with proper methods of care, handling, and storage of artwork
  • Experience with a full range of hand and power tools with excellent manual dexterity
  • Highly collaborative with a team-work aptitude
  • Strong problem solving abilities with strong organizational skills and ability to handle constant shifting priorities
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. with bending, kneeling, twisting, crouching
  • Comfort with working at elevated heights


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year art handling experience in a museum preferred
