Museum Boards

Many Oklahomans serve on museum boards of directors. The Oklahoma Museums Association offers helpful advice to board members when asked.  OMA also offers training and the Oklahoma Museum Conference where board members can learn more about museum governance and network with other museum board members from across the state.

The board of directors of a nonprofit museum has three primary legal duties known as the Duty of Care, Duty of Loyalty and Duty of Obedience.  Read more about these duties and Board Roles and Responsibilities from the National Council of Nonprofits.

Information on nonprofit boards is available from Board Source which offers a number of helpful guides and tools and is considered the authority on boards. The produce Leading with Intent which is an index of nonprofit board practices.  They also provide resources which will help board members with fundraising.
