The world-class museum is housed in a remodeled, historic 9,500-square-foot building in downtown Hobart, Oklahoma. The museum includes galleries with memorabilia and artifacts from General Frank’s personal collections, a traveling exhibit area, meeting facilities as well as an updated gift shop.  Exhibitions feature General Tommy Franks life and career, while also showcasing the changes in the American military from WWII to present, as told through the lives of the American soldier. The museum is home to cultural items from around the world, unique military equipment, one-of-a-kind historical photographs, and videos. The museum is also home to one of only two Medal of Honor displays in Oklahoma, one of the world’s largest collections of challenge coins, and what is believed to be the largest permanent 9/11 exhibit west of the Mississippi.

The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum, located in Hobart, OK is in search of a Museum Curator. The curator is under the direct supervision of the Executive Director. The museum curator will be responsible for developing exhibits, presentations, articles, and media pieces that share the collection and related history with the public, as well as developing museum programming for all ages. This position is not eligible for remote or hybrid work schedule.

Job Duties:

  • Leads the creation of all exhibitions – from initial design concept, research, and text writing, to layout, production, installation, and de-installation.
  • Leads in the creation of traveling and satellite exhibitions.
  • Manages and participates in daily exhibitions activities. Oversees the museum’s custodial responsibilities in caring for permanent, temporary, and loaned exhibitions.
  • Plans and facilitates museum related programs, classes, collaborations, and publications.
  • Work with outside museums to develop partnerships for future projects and exhibitions
  • Assists in the supervision of exhibitions volunteers and interns.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree in Museum studies, Military studies, History, or related field.
  • Knowledge of military history
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of museum and collection standards and best practices
  • Understanding of proper museum artifact handling
  • Knowledge of museum collections database, Past Perfect strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of exhibit development from concept to completion.

Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details
  • Research, writing, and editing skills
  • An understanding of visitor-centered approaches to content, development, and interpretation in physical exhibits and digital spaces.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects to successful completion on time and on budget.
