Governor Stitt’s Open Up and Recover Safely:  A Three-phase Approach to Open Oklahoma’s Economy

The Oklahoma Department of Commerce has confirmed the following regarding museums and Governor Stitt’s plan to reopen the economy. The overall plan can be found here and museum specific museum information can be found here

Museums are included under Entertainment Venues in the Governor’s Open Up and Recover Safely Plan and may reopen May 1, 2020.  If museums and similar institutions wish to reopen later, that is fine and their decision, but they may reopen beginning May 1, if they choose.

Regarding social distancing, museums must promote social distancing and only allow as many visitors into their institutions at one time as can reasonably be accommodated while allowing six (6) feet between “customer groups” – those attending the institution as a group/family rather than six (6) feet between individuals.

All other protocols as outlined in OMA’s “Museum ‘Open to the Public’ Guideline Considerations”  should be adhered to, including face masks for staff and guests, sanitizing facilities, limiting hands-on interactive stations, etc.  The COVID-19 virus is still spreading in Oklahoma.

Just because museums can open in Phase 1, OMA encourages museums to consider moving cautiously and deliberately to best protect museum staff, the public, and the cultural resources that are entrusted to them, which might include opening in Phase 2 or Phase 3.  In addition, museums must consider and follow their local government orders.
