We all want visitors and users to participate with our museums, but how can we design strategies to make that participation as meaningful as possible? Drawing from international examples, Nina Simon will share specific techniques for encouraging, supporting, and harnessing visitor participation in cultural institutions.

Nina Simon is Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History www.santacruzmah.org, which has gone through a radical transformation over the past year to become a community-driven gathering place. Attendance has more than doubled due to a new participatory approach to culture that invites all visitors to become actively involved in co creating exhibitions and programs.

Following Simon’s presentation, the group will participate in a solution session facilitated by OKME Chairman, Jason Harris. Bring your best ideas and share successes and failures with other museum staff from across the state. From concept to implementation, building participation in exhibit spaces and programming is fundamental in an institution’s success.

Call for Examples Do you have an example of a program or new exhibit component that highlights visitor interaction at your institution? Would you like to share your experience, project, or exhibit? Please contact Jason Harris before February 20, 2013 at 405.522.0785 or by email at jharris@okhistory.org.

Sponsored in part by OKME (Oklahoma Museum Educators), a standing professional committee of OMA, Oklahoma Arts Council, Kirkpatrick Family Fund, Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, Oklahoma City Museum of Art and Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.
